Following flooding in the Lakes during yesterday's storms, the River Eden at Appleby-in-Westmorland burst its banks last night, December 8.
An early warning from the Environment Agency allowed residents to fit their floodgates and prepare for the River Eden to flow over onto The Sands. At 5pm Cumbria Police closed the B6260 at Bridge Street in the town due to flooding.
The Environment Agency issued a flood warning at 3.20pm for The Sands, Appleby Cricket Ground and King Georges Field. By 6pm there were 21 flood alerts across the county
Appleby Primary and Grammar School sent pupils home early, before the closure of the only bridge across the river in the town, and the Christmas Concert at the Grammar School was postponed due to the adverse weather.
Appleby's retained Fire and Rescue Crew were called out at 7pm. Two appliances, Group Manager Adrian Holme and Watch Manager Neil Denney attended reports of flooding to a property on The Sands, Appleby.
Approximately two feet of water was inside a commercial property. Crews utilised life jackets, a light portable pump, water first responder kits and throw lines to make the property safe. Crews returned to home station at 9.20 hours.
Heavy rain is causing flooding in the Windermere area of Cumbria. Cumbria Police said they had a number of reports of vehicles stuck in water around Windermere and Troutbeck. The Low Wood Hotel on the shores of Windermere was flooded. Sections of the A591 at Ambleside and Windermere were closed for a time, along with a section of the A592 at Troutbeck Bridge.
Elsewhere there were strong wind warnings for the M6 in Cumbria and the A66 from Appleby to Scotch Corner was closed.The A595 from Kirkstone at Cookhouse corner was closed and there was flood water on the south side of the A6, just past Selside.
There were temporary road closures at Plumpton, Garrigil after a landslide and Ruckcroft, near Armathwaite.
