Young reporters celebrate journalism success

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School celebrated the fourth sucessful Year 8 Journalism Project with a special prize giving assembly presented by IT teacher Sue Bennett who outlined the work that has gone into this year’s project.

All Year 8 pupils chose local tourism themes and set up interviews with their subjects using letter writing, e-mail, research skills and interview techniques before writing up their articles.

This year the students have extended the project into year 9, editing the articles and designing a newsletter for visitors which is to be available at the Kirkby Stephen Tourist Information Centre. Added to the aforementioned expertise learnt, it has been imperative for the students to organise themselves well and they have shown great commitment through the various stages to their final newsletters.

Mrs. Bennett highlighted how difficult it had been to choose the winning newsletters.

Ann Sandell was thanked for her work with the three classes over many weeks and another  year’s winning project, being presented with flowers and chocolates.  Charles Thornton, Tourist Information Network Manager, presented prizes donated by Eden District Council.

The wining newsletter was produced by Issy Hunter and Francine Glanville. Runners up were: 2nd Abigail Birkbeck and Annabel Civil, 3rd Elly Crosyby and Katie Bowman, 4th Sunny Larkin-Jones, Emily Pinder and Heather Bland.
