More than 30 people attended the first annual general meeting held by the Heart of Eden Development Trust at Appleby Methodist Church.
Following the decision by the chair Barry Thompson to stand down from the lead role, Frank Price of Murton was proposed by Trust Director representing Bolton Parish, Peter Smith, was seconded by fellow Director John Hughes, representing Dufton Parish and elected.
Mr Price said: “I am delighted to take over from Barry as chair of the Trust. He has done a tremendous jobs of getting us to the point we are at today, and there is a lot of work to do to take forward the projects Barry and the team have started.
“It is a great challenge and I hope to live up to the high standards set by Barry during his time as chair.”
Mr Thomson said: “We started out just as a public group that met up and talked and now we have a very strong group of people who can develop things within the community of 10 parishes which make up the Heart of Eden.
“From starting from nothing and getting to where we are today is one of my greatest achievements.”
The guest speaker at the meeting was Eden District Council’s Communities Director, Ruth Atkinson who spoke about the new Localism Act and what it means to communities.
She covered the changes in planning, new community rights to challenge local authorities to run services for themselves, as well as new community rights to bid to buy threatened local services from the private sector, Neighbourhood planning and community right to build.
Ms Atkinson took questions from the floor and said new planning guidelines were very much pro-development.
Retiring chairman Barry Thompson took the opportunity to thank fellow directors and officers of the Trust for their support since the organisation was formed 18 months ago. He present flowers to the note taker June Watson and treasurer Lesley Atkinson for their help.
The Heart of Eden Development Trust is a community based organisation seeking to develop projects for the benefit of the people of the Heart of Eden area and is core funded by the local parish councils, Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council and the Rural Development Programme England
The organisation aims to improve improve facilities of the communities comprising parishes around Appleby-in-Westmorland: Appleby, Asby, Bandleyside, Bolton, Dufton, Kirkby Thore, Long Marton, Milburn, Murton, Temple Sowerby.
