Beat the Eden Valley Hills - by electric bike

It’s often believed that cycling in the Eden Valley is only for the fittest elite however a new initiative by
Appleby Chamber of Trade is set to change all that with the launch of an Electric Cycle Scheme in the town.

Funded by a grant from Eden District Council’s Community Fund, the Chamber has purchased 3 electric
bikes which are located at The Midland Hotel, just by Appleby Railway Station, and it is hoped that they will
make exploring the beautiful but hilly countryside of the Eden valley an enjoyable reality.

Last Thursday (26th April) local accommodation providers in the town and surrounding villages were invited
to a coffee morning at The Midland Hotel where they had the opportunity to try out the bikes for
themselves and learn a little more about the scheme from Carl Bendelow (Appleby Chamber of Trade
Secretary) and special guest Isobel Stoddart from The Electric Bicycle Network in the Lake District.
It is hoped that over the summer months the bikes will be used by the many visitors to the town, giving
them the opportunity to explore the lovely countryside using a very green mode of transport.

to “flatten” the hills and give the rider an enjoyable and safe ride. Rather than dreading the next hill, you
can enjoy the experience of cycling uphill with ease.”
As well as hopefully benefitting from Appleby’s tourist trade the bikes are also available for local residents
to try at the special rate of just £5 for half a day.
