A local business woman and artist are working together to attract more people into Penrith’s historic town centre.
Alex Jakob-Whitworth recently held an exhibition of her work at the High Head Sculpture Gallery. Now the Dufton based artist is hosting art sessions at Vine and Roses in Angel Lane in the town to encourage more people discover the joy of drawing.
And owner of Vine and Roses, Jane Gilman-Wallett believes turning her open space above the shop will provide a new social space in the town.
Alex said: “We both recognise the need for people in and around Penrith to have “something different” to do or learn that is easily accessible.
“Jane has a lovely room upstairs, above the florist shop that she is letting me used as a studio for the session.
“I have been tutoring for over 20 years to all ages and look forward to passing on the methods I have learnt.
“We have already hosted sessions of Life Drawing and we thought we would like to extend the Art practice and as I have been asked on several occasions about classes we decided to put the two together.
“Many leisure painters enjoy their painting but feel frustrated at their drawing techniques and want to improve these. So I have put this class together especially for them – to develop their skills.
“The second class is one for the more adventurous. It is for those who want to do something a little bit different – who want to produce images that aren’t straight painting or drawing but are more experimental – and more an exploration of media. This class follows a programme that explores media such as Gouache resist and Monoprinting.
“Most of the classes are standalones, but can also be booked as a block, for a reduction in cost.”
The sessions are held on Thursdays. The Development in Drawing sessions from 10am until 12 noon have begun, though places are still available and the Creative Art sessions to be held from 1pm-3pm will start from May 17.
