New recycling bag and box scheme starts on Monday in Eden

Eden residents are set to benefit from the new kerbside recycling scheme starting on Monday (2 July 2012). The first collections of the Bag and Box Scheme will take place in areas of Penrith, and for the first time residents will be able to recycle plastic bottles and containers from the kerbside.

Some residents have previously been able to recycle either glass, cans and paper, or paper and card depending on where they lived, but the new scheme covers the whole of the District.

Eden District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, Mike Tonkin said: “At the public information events we have held across the District to promote the new recycling service the reaction from local residents has been very positive.

“We are anticipating a bedding in period as people get used to the new recycling scheme and residents can contact the Council’s customer services team if they have any queries. By extending our recycling services District wide, we can hopefully boost Eden’s 45% recycling rate.”

Recycling Collection calendars have been sent out to all properties within Eden over the last week and the District Council are advising residents to check the dates carefully. To allow for the expansion of the scheme and the extra properties now included, usual collection dates are likely to have changed.

Where possible, the recycling collection days have been matched to existing refuse collection days. The Council is not changing your current refuse day and your blue bags will be picked up as normal.

All properties have been provided with two green recycling bags: one for plastic and one for mixed paper and card, which are being delivered by the newly appointed contractor Cumbria Waste Recycling. Properties which have previously had kerbside collections will continue to use their green boxes for cans and glass.

Properties which have not been included in a collection scheme should have had a green box delivered by Cumbria Waste Recycling. However please contact Eden District Council on 01768 817817 if you do not have two green bags and a green box for your first collection date shown on the calendar.

The new scheme will include over 25,000 households within the District and Eden District Council has been working closely with Cumbria Waste Recycling to get the Bag and Box Scheme underway. Residents are advised to leave the bags and box out for collection at their usual recycling collection point or if no existing recycling collection point then their usual refuse collection point, unless otherwise informed.
