The family of he couple who died following a road traffic collision in Hoff, Appleby on Saturday has paid tribute to them. Steve Murray, their eldest son said on behalf of the family: “We are all truly shocked and terribly upset by the tragic event on Saturday taking mum and dad away from us; as well as Grand parents and Great Grand parents from our children. It is hard to come to terms with something so shocking and painful. We thank family and friends for their support and such a difficult time
Mr Alan Murray, aged 73 of Scattergate Crescent in Appleby was driving his blue Vauxhall Omega from the Orton direction towards Appleby at about 3.35pm on Saturday afternoon (30th June) when his vehicle left the road and, after travelling down an embankment, turned upside down in a beck beneath the road. Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Mr Murray and his wife Barbara, 74, who was a passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed for four hours to allow Collision Investigators from Cumbria Constabulary to conduct a full examination of the scene and for the vehicle to be recovered from the water.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle travelling along the B6260 Orton Scar Road prior to the incident to contact the Roads Policing Unit on 101.
