Shadow ministers visit Sellafield

The Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Caroline Flint MP, accompanied by Shadow Minister of State for Energy and Climate Change Tom Greatrex MP have made their first visit to Sellafield.

During their visit to the site they met senior representatives from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and Sellafield Ltd as well as union convenors.

The visitors were able to see first hand the challenges and progress being made at the site, which is responsible for safely delivering decommissioning, reprocessing and nuclear waste management on behalf of the NDA. It is the largest site in the NDA estate and approximately half of the NDA’s £2.9 billion budget is spent there.

The visitors were briefed on the Sellafield Performance Plan, which was developed to provide a means of challenging the schedule and cost of site activities and thereby secure improved and accelerated delivery.

This plan prioritises work at Sellafield and focuses on the reduction of high hazards, effective waste management and accelerated decommissioning work.

The Rt Hon Caroline Flint MP, later tweeted: "Really interesting visit to Sellafield today with Mr Tom Greatrex MP, impressed by the skills, commitment and experience of the workforce here.
