At 1:00 pm on Sunday 8th October 2012, emergency services were called after a man collapsed whilst competing in the Ian Hodgson fell race in Patterdale. The man collapsed in an area known has Fairfield Horsehoe. Medical assistance was provide at the scene by doctors and staff involved in the race. The air ambulance attended and transported the man to Furness General Hospital. Despite the efforts by the medical staff, he tragically died.
He was formally identified as Darren Holloway, aged 42, from Ilkeston, Derbyshire. His family has been informed and there are no suspicious circumstances to his death. The case has been passed to the coroner.
