CUMBRIA County Council is urging volunteers to step forward to help deliver meals on wheels in Windermere.
The vital service for elderly and vulnerable people delivers hot meals to thousands of people across the county through the week.
The call for volunteers comes after the volunteers braved treacherous weather conditions during the last cold snap.
Catherine Moody, Cumbria County Council’s Community Wheels coordinator, said: “The Windermere volunteers were fantastic and were one of many that didn’t let the snow and ice deter them from delivering hot meals to vulnerable and elderly people in their community.
“The volunteers are the heart and soul of the community meals service and without their goodwill, dedication and support the service quite simply would not exist.
“I must also pay a special thanks to one of our retired volunteers Tommy Bland who along with other 4x4 drivers have made themselves available and on many occasions have made delivery possible.”
Cllr Jo Stephenson, Cumbria County Councillor for Windermere, said: "For some older people the meals on wheels volunteer is the only person they will see that day. They are often the eyes and ears of social services and I would call on anyone in the area who thinks they could help to make contact.
“Volunteering may not bring financial rewards but helping vulnerable people in your area is at the core of community spirit and brings with it more fulfilling rewards.”
Deliverers are trained in food handling and will also have their transport costs paid for. They are also trained to carry out standard ‘safe and well’ checks during visits.
Windermere is one of many areas across the county were more volunteers are needed and Community Meals need drivers and helpers to deliver a hot meal to vulnerable elderly in your Community.
