Special Constables joined local police officers to target offending on Barrow’s roads.
The awareness raising and enforcement event held in the town was one of many traffic operations undertaken by Cumbrian Specials over the last two months to improve road and vehicle safety.
Residents of Walney, Barrow Island, Newbarns and Ormsgill have all raised concerns about speeding and anti-social driving through their area so the local Special Constables organised this operation to help tackle the issue. The Constables and officers spent the day in hot spot areas where they stopped 37 vehicles, issued five fixed penalty notices, gave 18 warnings for excess speed and reported one person for driving offences.
Richard Steen, Area Officer for South Cumbria Special Constabulary, said: “Road related offending is a concern for local people so it is one of our top priorities. As Special Constables, we have been working closely with the neighbourhood policing teams and the roads policing unit to tackle the issues raised by improving driver awareness and helping to reduce the number of people injured on Cumbrian roads. This successful operation was a mixture of education and enforcement and was an important part of that work.”
