Eden flies the flag for Armed Forces Day

People from Eden joined in the national programme of events to celebrate and recognise HM Armed Forces - past, present and future - as part of the national Armed Forces Day being held on Saturday 30 June 2011.

A special flag raising event was held at Penrith Town Hall on 25 June to coincide with ceremonies taking place across the UK. The Armed Forces Day flag was raised by Eden District Council’s Chairman Keith Morgan and David Stonehouse, Chairman of The Penrith and District Branch of The Royal British Legion.

“We are always delighted to proudly fly the flag to celebrate Armed Forces Day, which symbolises the contribution the Armed Forces have and continue to make to our country. We are delighted that members of The Royal British Legion joined with Eden Councillors, many of whom proudly served in HM Armed Forces to mark the occasion,” said Council Chairman Keith Morgan.

Armed Forces Day is an annual event, providing the nation with a dedicated day where people can come together to show their appreciation and support of the Armed Forces.

The Reverend John Oliver, President of Penrith and District Branch Royal British Legion said. “As a previous member of Her Majesty’s forces I know that it is always a moral booster to know that you have the support of the general public whilst carrying out your duty to your country. Showing our support in this way and continuing as we the Members of the Royal British Legion do, to stand Shoulder to Shoulder with all who Serve and have served we show our appreciation for the difficult tasks that our Armed Forces are asked to perform on our behalf.”
