Theatre workshop to raise awareness of dangers of alcohol with Windermere pupils

A police officer from Ulverston and Lakes policing team has raised money to bring a theatre workshop to the pupils of the Lakes School, Windermere to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol.

PC Simone Backhouse from the Ulverston and Lakes policing team has raised funds for the event to take place on Friday 13th July, just before the Summer Holiday for 160 year 7 and 8 pupils to enjoy.  The play is entitled “HANDS UP”, and is presented by Up Front Theatre. It is themed around the problems encountered by young people, alcohol, their responsibilities and the consequences for all in our communities.

Following the play the young people will be invited to discuss the issues which are raised during the play, to ask questions and enter into debate with a “Question Time“ style panel made up from the former Mayor of Windermere, a Paramedic, The Chair of the local Barwatch and a person from the Chernaclo Community as well as one of the actors from the play.

Sgt Ken Jewell says, “Like any other community, the Lakes School catchment area has occasional problems when young people get hold of alcohol. We see this work with the Lakes School and Up Front Theatre as a valuable way to get an important safety message across to the year 7 and 8 pupils.

“The play and question time will be filmed and will be available to view live, online so that other young people in the area can benefit. The online audience can “tweet” a comment or question to the Question Time panel, and play an active part in what will be an interesting and lively debate. It is hoped that other schools in the area will log on to take part.

“We are grateful for the community assistance raising the money to fund this work and to the volunteers who are making up our Question Time panel.”

You can join the Lakes School audience at 10am on Friday 13th July by logging on to mms://217.114.60.179:8080
