Scouts stage 1,000 mile cycle challenge

Ten members of Ayers Explorer Scout Unit in Carlisle are setting off to ride 1000 miles between them,100 miles each this Sunday. Explorer Scout Leader Eddie Ward said, “We are always desperate for funds to support our members to enjoy the many opportunities Scouting provides, but also attempt to support the wider community in various ways.”

Explorer Scout, Callum Murdoch, aged 15, added, “We are always looking for adventure, fun and challenge and each year and set an extreme challenge for ourselves, both for our active programme and also to support our chosen charity.”

The Unit uses the annual extreme challenge as a sponsored event, with fundraising being split between themselves and a nominated charity. Last year their members walked the length of the County in 24 hours raising funds for the Force’s Children’s Trust; having raised funds for Watchtree Wheelers the year before. This year they have been challenged to cycle 100miles each in a day.

Their members deliberated a worthy cause to support and were inspired by the story of Alice Pyne’s efforts to support others. 16 year old Alice Pyne, who lives with her parents and sister in Ulverston, has been fighting cancer for over 5 years yet bravely wants to help others.

Vicky Pyne, Alice’s mum said, “Alice came up with the idea of Alice’s Escapes after we spent a week being looked after by the Torbay Holiday Helper’s Network, based in Devon. All accommodation, food, outings and activities were given with the compliments of local businesses”.

After many years of gruelling treatments, Alice and her family were able to step back and experience ‘normal’ family life.

Alice’s Escapes is a charity run by a team of volunteers committed to providing free holidays for families with a seriously ill child. They aim to give this opportunity to all such families to ‘escape’ and enjoy some peace and relaxation in the beautiful Lake District.

The boys and girls from the Explorer Scout Unit will be starting the 100mile bike ride at 8am on Sunday 15 July 2012 on a 5mile circuit between Irthington & Laversdale. If you would like to support their efforts you can sponsor them online at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ayers
