Police provide advice and guidance for festival goers and campers

Cumbria Police have issued advice and guidance to people who are visiting the county during the summer holidays to attend one of music events or to have a
camping holiday. There are a number of events taking place in the up and coming weeks, including Cockermouth Rock Festival, Kendal Calling and Maryport Blues Festival and to help ensure people have an enjoyable time, Cumbria Constabulary has included safety advice on the website.

The information includes general advice about security, including leaving credit cards which you will not use at home and having a record of the emergency numbers for
the bank in case a cash card does get stolen.

There are a variety of tips on the site for campers too, including not keeping everything in the one bag, which prevents any opportunistic thieves from taking a large amount in one go.

Sergeant Richard Farnworth said: “In the excitement of going to a music event or enjoying yourself on a camping holiday, sometimes security can be forgotten. It is important to make sure that all of your belongings are safe and leave anything of value at home or make sure you take it with you when out and about.

“Do not be complacent, never leave anything on show, it just becomes at advertisement for thieves. Don’t leave expensive items in a tent, either make sure you take them with you or don’t bring them at all. Think about if you will really use it, if not, then it is not worth risking losing it.

“Cumbria is one of the safest places to visit and by taking the time to read the tips on security, we aim to make everyone’s visit an enjoyable one and reduce the chances for opportunistic thieves to turn people into victims of crime and spoiling their weekend or holiday.

“If you do not have access to the internet, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Community Safety Teams in North, West and South Cumbria. You can
reach someone by ringing Cumbria Constabulary on 101 and asking to speak to a Community Safety Officer.”
