The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the Rt Hon Eric Pickles MP has praised Eden communities for supporting the Olympic Torch Relay when it visited the District on 20 June.
Community groups in Brough, Appleby and Penrith spent many months planning their individual Olympic Torch Relay celebration events and were supported by District Council officers, Cumbria Constabulary and the County Council.
Eden District Council’s Leader, Councillor Gordon Nicolson said: “I am delighted to see acknowledgement by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government of the hard work put in by local communities in Eden, who organised fantastic Olympic Torch Relay celebrations supported by the Eden Community Fund. These were remarkable achievements for the area with an estimated 17,000 taking part across the District in this once in a lifetime event.”
