South Lakes MP Tim Farron will be asking local residents to support his campaign with the NFU for a fair deal for UK farmers at this Thursday's Westmorland Show. He recently gave his backing to the NFU's 10 point plan which is designed to secure the long term future of the dairy industry. At last weeks Livestock 2012 event organisations representing dairy farmers and processors agreed a voluntary code of practice covering milk contracts. Tim is calling on the Government to police this strongly to ensure the deal is adhered to.
Currently farmers lose around 5p on every pint they produce. The average cost of production is 30p per pint. Tim is planning to hold a mass-signing of the petition at the Westmorland Show at 2pm by his stall at the main entrance of the showground. Tim is asking local residents to sign the postcards backing the campaign, which he will then hand over to the Prime Minister in London.
He said:: "I am delighted to work with the NFU and campaign for a better deal for dairy farmers. I know that local people on Westmorland Show day will back our farmers and sign the postcards. After the show I will be taking them to the Prime Minister and telling him to listen to our rural communities and ensure a fair deal for farmers.”
