Railway company seeks trainee to help restore 1930's train

A training opportunity has arisen for rail enthusiasts to work alongside a Cumbrian upholstery company to restore a 1930’s railway coach. The scheme is held in partnership with Stainmore Railway Company and Cumbria Fells and Dales, who are part of the county council’s economic development team.

The Heritage Skills Initiative is offering this unique and exciting opportunity to undertake a three month work placement with Stephen Ball Upholstery.

The Stainmore Railway Company are currently undertaking the restoration of a teak Gresley Tourist Third Open Railway Coach built in 1936. The successful applicant will work directly alongside Stephen to complete the production of 26 new seats for the vehicle.  The funds for the upholstery and work placement were raised with the help of a local Trust, a number of private individuals and a grant from Cumbria Fells and Dales Local Action Group; delivering the Rural Development Programme for England.

The three month placement is full time and the successful applicant will learn a variety of upholstery skills.  Previous experience is not necessary but would be useful - a willingness to learn and an interest in upholstery are more important.  The necessary tools will be provided and the student will receive a bursary of £100 per week.

The trainee will attend Stephen’s upholstery evening class at Ullswater Community College once per week and will need to travel to the upholstery workshop in Cliburn each day.  Due to funding criteria applicants must reside within Cumbria for the duration of the placement.

Cllr Tim Knowles, cabinet member for transport and environment, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time working alongside Stephen in his workshop on a very special project, as training opportunities like this are much sought after. I’m pleased that the county council have been able to work in partnership to make this opportunity happen.”
