Theatre by the Lake is offering a new set of workshops for young people interested in writing plays. The Young Writers Group is for young people aged 14-20 who are inspired by and dedicated to the idea of writing for the stage.
The group – originally formed in 2009 to encourage young potential playwrights – will meet for weekly two-hour sessions from Tue 25 September, which will continue over the Autumn and Spring terms. From week to week, participants will collaborate on a series of exercises about playwriting, considering all aspects of the process including the audience, performance space, character, dialogue and plot. The sessions are not just lectures – there’s lots of participation and putting pen to paper will only be part of the process!
Over the two terms each young writer will work towards the creation of a short play, which will be shared with Youth Theatre performers in May 2013 – some pieces may even be developed for performance in the Festival of Youth in 2014. To help inspire individual responses, the group will have a theme for the final productions - ‘Lest we forget…’
The weekly sessions will be run jointly by Theatre by the Lake’s Associate Director Stefan Escreet and newly-appointed Head of Education & Participation Annie McCourt. Stefan has run many of the Young Writers Group sessions since they began. He has directed numerous productions at Theatre by the Lake – including this season’s Bedroom Farce and Roma and the Flannelettes (a world première) – and takes the lead on the theatre’s New Writing activities. He has also worked on script development as a Radio Drama Producer for the BBC and has been an actor for many years.
Annie is an award-winning playwright, having won the Trinity College London International Playwriting Competition 2011 with her play Moth to the Flame. As Creative Director with two North East theatre companies that specialised in work for younger audiences she has produced a wide variety of work by, with and for children and young people.
In a new development of the Young Writers programme this year, Theatre by the Lake is offering participants the opportunity to attain a national qualification. The Arts Award recognizes the efforts of young people to grow both in their art form and in leadership skills which enable them to inspire other young people to become involved.
Anyone aged 14-20 can sign up for the Young Writers Group, which costs £70 per participant (per 10-week term) – just contact Amy Ferguson on 017687 81108 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
