Movie buffs in Workington are offered the chance to attend a free screening and meet the co-director of an inspirational movie telling a true story of hope, determination and principles.
Set in 1844, “The Rochdale Pioneers” – starring John Henshaw of “Born and Bred” and “Early Doors” fame - is a 52 minute movie about 28 working men whose vision for a fairer society inspired them to lay down principles recognised as the birth of the co-operative movement.
The free screening of the movie – which is being brought to Workington by The Co-operative’s Membership Office in the region - takes place at the Helena Thompson Museum on 24 October.
The film – which was made by The Co-operative British Youth Film Academy and received its TV debut on Film4 last November - will be followed by a special questions and answer session with its co-director, John Montegrande.
Nicola Wylde, The Co-operative’s Membership Officer for the region, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring the film and its co-director to Workington as part of our plans to celebrate the 150th anniversary of The Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS).
“The Rochdale Pioneers set out principles that became the basis for how co-operatives all around the world operate to this day. From these humble beginnings there are now an estimated one billion members of co-operatives worldwide.
“The film is a true and remarkable story of a battle to overcome poverty, prejudice and the harsh conditions of the mid 19th century - a story of struggle against adversity that remains just as relevant today.”
The film was commissioned by The Co-operative to mark the United Nations International Year of Co-operatives, a year dedicated to highlighting the contributions of co-operatives to world-wide socio-economic development in particular poverty reduction, community cohesion, employment generation and social integration.
Tickets for the screening, which takes place at 2:30PM, are limited and booking early is recommended.
