Carlisle man sentenced after series of harassing calls

A man from Carlisle was sentenced to 110 days in prison for harassment at Carlisle Magistrates Court. William John Scott, 46, from Highgarth Court, Carlisle, pleaded guilty. In early 2011 the victim, a 50 year old woman from Carlisle, began receiving calls from an unknown man on a withheld telephone number. These calls were often of a sexual nature, and the woman changed her number.

She then started to receive calls in December 2013 to her new number, in which Scott made comments about her personal life, suggesting he knew details about her life. In January, after numerous unwanted phone calls, she reported her concerns to the police and on 5th February Scott was arrested at his home.

PC Jayne Spencer said: “We take any form of harassment very seriously, and I am pleased that Scott has received a custodial sentence for his actions. The victim was understandably very upset by these frequent calls, and as a result of the harassment changed her behaviour and felt nervous being alone in the house when she received a call.

“No one should live under the fear of harassment, and I would urge anyone who has any concerns to call Cumbria Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. We investigate all reports of harassment sensitively, thoroughly, and professionally.”
