Local charity, Carlisle Youth Zone is on the hunt for more volunteers as they move ahead with ambitious plans to develop services. “We are looking for around fifty volunteers to help with every aspect of the Youth Zone” explained Julia Mullarkey Service Development Manager at Carlisle Youth Zone. “We need help with our new Mentoring programme working in partnership with the Youth Offending Service, Volunteers to help at both the junior and Senior clubs and we are also looking for help behind the scenes with administration and fundraising.”
Carlisle Youth Zone runs a very comprehensive free training scheme for volunteers tailored to the area the volunteers will be working in. All volunteers are trained in safeguarding issues and Health & Safety awareness but if they are working directly with young people also enjoy training in and behaviour management. For those working in the mentoring scheme additional specialist training to equip them for this challenging but rewarding role.
“We really value and appreciate the help volunteers make to the Youth Zone,” said Stephen Mason, Chief Executive. “We could not provide the service we do for young people without the help and commitment of an army of volunteers, but now we need more as we develop and introduce exciting new projects and the workload increases.”
You do not need any special skills to become a volunteer at Carlisle Youth Zone just an interest and enthusiasm in helping young people reach their potential, of course helping behind the scenes is just as important as “face to face” work with members.
Andy Dodds from Kirkbride, a volunteer since the Youth Zone opened told us, “it’s an amazing place and you can really see the difference you have made as you get to know the young people. They really appreciate what the Zone has to offer and for the older ones it's helping them gain extra skills for those all-important CVs as they get ready for their first job.”
