Remand prisoner found hanged in cell

Police have been informed of the death of Jamie Smith, aged 43, from Carlisle who was in remand at Durham Prison in connection with a serious sexual assault on a 41 year old local woman. The incident took place in an area adjacent to Aglionby Street, Carlisle sometime between 11.00pm on Saturday 17th March and the early hours of Sunday 18th March. Jamie Smith was charged with rape and was to appear at Carlisle Crown Court for trial on 6th June 2012.
A statement issued by the  Prison Service, said: "HMP Durham prisoner Jamie Smith (dob 13/10/68) was found hanging in a cell at approximately 9.30am on Monday 21 May. "He was pronounced dead at approximately 9.40am.
"As with all deaths in custody, the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
