Local MP Tim Farron has today welcomed the news that South Lakeland District Council is to start a month trial to collect plastic and cardboard from the kerbside.
Householders in the trial areas of parts of Kendal and Burneside will receive an information leaflet prior to the service starting, which will include details of the additional materials to be collected and the method of collection. A total of 7,500 properties are included in the trial area.
The first collections of plastic and cardboard will start week commencing 15 October 2012.
According to Defra 41.2% of the household waste generated in England is recycled or composted. Here in South Lakeland we recycle around 44% of our waste, putting us above the national average.
The MP said: “This is great news and I welcome South Lakeland District Council’s decision today. Lots of local residents have asked me if we can get kerbside plastic and cardboard recycling so it is great that they have given this pilot the go ahead. I will keep pushing them to make sure the scheme is rolled out throughout South Lakeland.
“I also want to thank cabinet members Peter Thornton, Clare Feeney-Johnson and Kendal councillors Giles Archibald and John McCreesh. Giles and John’s campaigning helped make today happen.”
