Visitors to the spectacular Christmas displays at Hayes Garden World can now say hello to “Herbie”, a vintage VW Beetle lovingly restored in the image of the star of those much-loved Disney films. Herbie will be on display from now until Christmas, where he will be collecting any monies donated in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society. Visitors to the garden
centre are welcome to take their own photos of Herbie in return for a donation to Alzheimer’s Society funds.
Herbie’s owner, Chris Ritchie from Barrow, explains: “We have restored our “Herbie” to look as close to the Disney original as we can and he is now very much part of the family. Herbie shares his registration initials, “EMY 683 J”, with my daughter, Emily Jayne and when we saw that we just knew we had to have him. He now works hard to raise funds on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of Vincent Hall, my father-in-law, whom we sadly lost to this awful disease in January 2010.
"Herbie has helped us to raise several thousand pounds through his support at various sponsored events. Recently, he supported me in my 50-mile “Tour-de-Furness” cycling
challenge where we raised £700. People of all ages seem to love him and we hope that having him on display in such a prominent location in the run-up to Christmas will help us to raise lots of money for this very worthy cause”.
Herbie will be on duty at Hayes Garden World, Ambleside seven days a week from now until Christmas Eve. Hayes Christmas Displays are open daily between 9am and 6pm, Sundays 11am – 5pm.
