Theatre by the Lake has two completely different events coming your way which will take audiences across the world in a whirlwind of adventure, music and dance. Paul Rose will be telling extraordinary tales of his travels around the globe, while flamenco sensation Juan Martín will be providing an evening of musical delight and sensational dance.
Paul Rose, the professional diver, polar explorer, mountaineer and yachtsman, famed for his BBC documentaries such as Voyages of Discovery, Oceans and Britain’s Secret Seas, will be making his way to Theatre by the Lake’s Main House on Tuesday 21 February at 7.30pm. In Paul Rose – Explore! the television presenter will talk about a lifetime of remarkable adventures using behind the scenes stories and footage from his programmes, to inspire audiences with his spirit of adventure and passion for the environment. Paul will discuss his exhilarating journeys, from Antarctica to Everest via the planet’s last true remaining wilderness – the vast expanses of the oceans.
Paul has spent over 40 years exploring the world on both land and sea, from climbing Antarctica’s most active volcano to retracing the voyages of pioneer Captain Cook. Dubbed ‘the survivalist historian’ by the Times, he has been “run over” by an iceberg the size of Hyde Park and once had to survive for four days on soup made out of toothpaste. All these stories will be recounted by Paul as he asks the question ‘Why explore?’, and will make the whole audience want to do just that.
The next event is a musical evening of energy and passion with riveting displays of dance as Juan Martín returns to Theatre by the Lake on Wednesday 22 February at 7.30pm, following a sell-out performance in 2009. Performing his own compositions, the Juan Martín Flamenco Ensemble includes a line-up of some of the finest musicians and flamenco dancers. His unique style of music embraces classical, jazz and modern harmonies while upholding and celebrating traditional flamenco.
Voted into the top three guitarists in the world by US Guitar Player magazine, Juan is a celebrated virtuoso of the flamenco guitar. He has mesmerised audiences all over the world and his work is studied from Moscow to Beijing and San Francisco back to Spain. This rare treat will reveal Juan’s phenomenal talent combined with a spectacle of dance that everyone can enjoy.
“A giant of the flamenco guitar tradition, the cream of Spain’s flamenco dancers” The Times.
