Folk star Maddy at Theatre by the Lake

Legendary folk singer Maddy Prior can be seen in a new guise when her latest tour ends at Theatre by the Lake on Sun 28 October. Best known as the lead vocalist of English folk-rock band Steeleye Span – credited with bringing folk into the mainstream in the 70s – Maddy has now teamed up with multi-instrumentalist and singer Giles Lewin and bright young accordionist (and clog dancer!) Hannah James.

Some 40 years after she appeared on the folk club circuit, Maddy is one of the best loved, respected and admired artists in British music. She is acknowledged as one of the great interpreters of traditional song, however over her career she has explored a broad musical palette, from traditional folk to hard rock and even electronic music. Her longstanding contribution to folk music was recognised in 2000 with the award of an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

As a long-time collaborator with the Carnival Band, this new venture sees Maddy reunited with one of its stalwarts in fiddle player Giles Lewin, whose background ranges from classical training to a stint in Egypt studying Arabic violin.

Hannah James is best-known for her collaboration with Sam Sweeney – the pair were nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award in 2010 – and she has also previously played with Kerfuffle and exciting young group The Demon Barbers. As well as playing the accordion, she is also a talented singer and clog dancer.

Maddy Prior visits Theatre by the Lake on Sun 28 October at 7.30pm. This is the final date of her tour and tickets are limited, so book now to make sure you don’t miss out on what promises to be a fantastic evening of folk – from clog dancing to klezmer! Tickets for this event are priced at £17 and £12 (no discounts); students/U16s £10. To book tickets call Box Office on 017687 74411 or book online at www.theatrebythelake.com
